Cape Neddick

Cape Neddick is the northern village of York , and it is best known for one thing: the lighthouse on the Nubble, a small rocky island a few hundred feet offshore that is probably the most photographed lighthouse in the United States.

The village itself is a scatter of houses, a few restaurants and a river mouth. Most people come for the light, look at it for twenty minutes, and leave, which means the rest of Cape Neddick stays quiet.

The Nubble

Cape Neddick Light was built in 1879 and sits on its islet with the keeper's house beside it, separated from the mainland by a narrow, dangerous channel. You cannot walk out to it, and there is no boat service. The viewing is entirely from Sohier Park on the headland opposite, where there is parking, a gift shop and a stretch of rocks to sit on.

That constraint is the point. The composition from Sohier Park is fixed and famous, and the light is close enough that you do not need a long lens. It is floodlit in the evening and decorated for a few weeks around Christmas, which draws its own crowd.

The rest of the village

Beyond the light, Cape Neddick has a small beach at the river mouth, salt marsh behind it, and access to Mount Agamenticus a few minutes inland: the highest point on the immediate southern coast, with a summit road and a network of mountain-bike and hiking trails through one of the largest undeveloped coastal forests between here and Acadia.

Long Sands Beach begins just south of the cape and runs two miles toward York Beach village. Parking along Long Sands Road is metered and considerably easier to find than at Sohier Park in August.

Getting here and when to go

Cape Neddick is on Route 1A between York Beach and Ogunquit, a few minutes from I-95 exit 7. Sohier Park's small lot fills early on summer days and the overflow parks along the approach road.

Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the best light on the Nubble, and both are far quieter than midday. Winter visits are bleak in a way that suits the subject.

Common questions

Is Cape Neddick a town or part of York?

It is a village inside the town of York, not a separate municipality. Cape Neddick has its own post office and ZIP code, which is why it turns up as a mailing address, but it votes and pays taxes as part of York alongside York Village, York Harbor and York Beach. The four run together along the shore road.

Can you visit Boon Island Light?

Not on foot. Boon Island is a bare ledge well offshore from Cape Neddick, with no dock, no beach and nothing on it but the granite tower and a helicopter pad. It is not open to the public and there is no regular boat service. You can see it clearly from shore on a good day, and it rates 4.6 from 40 reviews.

Is there a beach at Cape Neddick?

Yes. Cape Neddick Beach sits at the mouth of the Cape Neddick River, a small pocket of sand that mostly serves the neighborhood. For a proper stretch, Long Sands Beach runs south toward York Beach and has the parking, the bathrooms and the surf. Both are tidal, so check the tide before you commit to a spot for the day.

Is Cape Neddick worth a stop?

For an hour or two, yes. Cape Neddick is a residential village rather than a destination, and the reason to come is the shoreline drive, the rocks and the water, not shops or nightlife. Pair it with York Beach if you want food and company, or with Ogunquit just north. It does not carry a full day on its own.
