New Harbor is a small working fishing village on the Pemaquid peninsula, and it is one of the more photogenic harbors in Maine precisely because nobody arranged it that way: lobster boats, traps stacked on the wharves, and a narrow inlet barely wide enough to turn in.
It is also a departure point for Monhegan Island, which gives the village a steady trickle of visitors passing through to somewhere else.
What New Harbor is known for
Its position. Pemaquid Point, with its much-photographed lighthouse standing on dramatically striated rock, is a few minutes south. Colonial Pemaquid and Fort William Henry, on the western side of the peninsula, preserve one of the earliest English settlement sites in New England, with an archaeological site and a reconstructed fort tower.
Pemaquid Beach, a genuine sand beach on the sheltered side of the peninsula, is a short drive and is one of the better swimming beaches on the mid-coast.
Getting to Monhegan
The Hardy Boat runs from New Harbor to Monhegan Island: an hour each way, and the shortest crossing to the island from the mainland. Monhegan has no cars, seventeen miles of trails on 600 acres, cliffs on its seaward side rising 150 feet, and an artists' colony that has drawn painters since the nineteenth century. The Monhegan Lighthouse (4.8 across 45 Google reviews) stands at the island's high point.
Day trips are possible but tight. Check the return sailing before you plan a hike. Staying a night is much the better option, and the island's few inns book well ahead.
Things to do
Watch the harbor. Take the boat to Monhegan, or a shorter puffin-watching trip to Eastern Egg Rock, one of the restored puffin colonies off this stretch of coast. Eat lobster on a wharf, this is one of the places where doing so is entirely unstaged.

New Harbor is at the end of Route 130, about twenty-five minutes south of Damariscotta and Route 1.

Should you choose Monhegan or a puffin cruise from New Harbor?
Choose Monhegan for a day ashore, or the Eastern Egg Rock puffin watch for a shorter wildlife outing. Hardy Boat's Monhegan ferry requires separate outbound and return tickets: published one-way fares are $35 for ages 13+, $30 for ages 2–12 and $15 for children under two. The operator describes an hour outbound, about 1.25 hours returning and roughly five hours ashore for its day-trip pattern. These are the operator's journey figures, not driving estimates. Common questions
Is New Harbor the same place as Pemaquid?
No.
Both are villages inside the town of Bristol, on the same peninsula in Lincoln County.
New Harbor is the working harbor partway down the point; Pemaquid and Pemaquid Point lie south of it, with the lighthouse at the very tip.
Addresses, road signs and boat listings all use the village names, which is why one town ends up with several.
Is there a beach in New Harbor?
Not in the harbor itself, which is a working waterfront of lobster boats and wharves.
The nearest sand is Pemaquid Beach Park, a short drive across the peninsula, with a supervised swimming area and changing facilities in season.
The water here stays cold well into July, so most swimming is brief even in high summer.
Do you need a car in New Harbor?
Yes.
There is no bus or shuttle on the Pemaquid peninsula, and the village sits well off Route 1.
Once you arrive you can walk the harbor and the roads around it, but the lighthouse, the beach and Damariscotta all mean driving.

Is New Harbor a quiet place to stay?
Very.
Lodging is a handful of inns, motels and rentals, dinner is served early, and there is no nightlife to speak of.
That suits people who want a working harbor, a boat trip and dark skies.
Anyone after shops and bars within walking distance will do better basing in Damariscotta or Boothbay Harbor.
