The three beaches, north to south

Beach Avenue runs southwest from Lower Village along the water. Everything below sits on it, within walking distance of each other if you are prepared to walk on a road with a narrow shoulder.

Gooch's Beach

The big one, and the one people mean when they say Kennebunk Beach without qualifying it. Roughly half a mile of hard-packed sand, gentle enough for swimming, open enough for a real surf break when there is swell. It rates 4.6 from 579 reviews — the most-reviewed beach in town by a wide margin, with a second listing at 4.9 from 53.

Gooch's is where the lifeguards are in season, where the surf schools set up, and where the crowd concentrates. It is also where the beach walkers go: the flat sand at low water makes a natural out-and-back of about a mile each way.

Middle Beach

Between the other two, and the one nobody writes about — which tells you something. Middle Beach is largely cobble and rock rather than sand, with a seawall behind it and very little beach left at high water. It does not carry its own listing in our directory, and that absence is fair: it is a place to sit on a rock and look at the water, not a place to spend a day.

Go there for a sunrise, or when the other two are heaving and you want twenty feet of shoreline to yourself. Do not go there with a cooler and an expectation of sand.

Mother's Beach

The family beach, at the southern end by Sea Road, rated 4.6 from 477 reviews, with a second listing at 4.7 from 45. It is smaller and more sheltered than Gooch's, tucked behind a rocky point that knocks the surf down, which is exactly why parents choose it. There is a playground behind the sand and a tidal pool that fills on the drop — genuinely good for toddlers who are not ready for open surf.

The trade-off is size. Mother's is a fraction of Gooch's, and on a hot Saturday it is shoulder to shoulder by eleven. A third listing, filed simply as Kennebunk Beach and rated 4.8 from 84 reviews, covers the same Beach Avenue frontage.

Parking: the part that ruins people's mornings

This is the single most important thing to understand about Kennebunk's beaches. There is no free parking on Beach Avenue in season. The town operates a permit system, sells daily, weekly and seasonal permits, and enforces them properly — the parking staff work the strip constantly and tickets are routine, not theoretical.

What to do:

• Buy your permit before you leave the house. The town sells them online and at the town office; sorting it out from a car on Beach Avenue with a two-year-old melting down is not the move.
• Check the town's current rules for dates and rates rather than trusting anything you read on a travel site, including this one. The rates change and the enforcement window shifts.
• Do not improvise a spot on the shoulder. Beach Avenue is narrow, the no-parking signage is comprehensive, and the residents call it in.
• If you are staying locally, ask your inn or rental — many hand out permits with the booking, which makes the whole problem disappear.

The alternative is to walk or bike in from Lower Village, which is about a mile to Gooch's and pleasant enough on a clear morning. Plenty of people do exactly that and skip the whole business.

Tides matter more here than you think

These are tidal beaches with a real range, and the difference between low and high water is not cosmetic. At high tide Gooch's narrows to a strip and Middle Beach effectively disappears under the seawall. At low tide Gooch's opens into a broad flat expanse you could land a plane on.

Look up the tide before you commit. Arriving at high water on a busy day means competing for a much smaller beach than the one in the photographs, and it is the most common reason people come away thinking Kennebunk Beach is overrated. Mid-tide falling is the sweet spot: plenty of sand, water still deep enough to swim.

Parson's Beach, the fourth one

Parson's Beach (4.6 from 291 reviews) sits at the mouth of the Mousam River at the southern end of town, reached down a lane of old maples that is one of the prettier approaches on this coast. It is quiet, wild-feeling, and backed by dune and marsh rather than houses.

It is also the hardest to visit. The land is private, the access is by long-standing custom rather than right, and there is essentially nowhere to legally leave a car. Most people who look it up never actually get there. If you can walk or cycle to it, it is lovely; if you are planning to drive and park, plan on something else.

Just over the line in Kennebunkport

Two more beaches are close enough to consider, but note the catch: they are in a different town, with a different permit, and a Kennebunk sticker does you no good at either.

• Colony Beach (4.7 from 167 reviews) — small, right by the river mouth in Kennebunkport, walkable from Dock Square. Convenient rather than spectacular.

Lower Village, where Beach Avenue meets the bridge, is the practical food stop. Ranked by rating against review volume, so the order reflects places that are both well liked and genuinely busy:

• The Clam Shack — 4.2 from 1,872 reviews, 2 Western Avenue. The lobster roll everyone queues for, right on the bridge. The line is real; the rating reflects the wait as much as the food.
• Duffy's Tavern & Grill — 4.3 from 1,028 reviews, 4 Main Street, in the upper village. Reliable, roomy, good for a group.
• Batson River Brewing & Distilling — 4.4 from 637 reviews, 12 Western Avenue. Beer, a fire pit, and space to spread out after the beach.
• Boulangerie - A Proper Bakery — 4.8 from 426 reviews, 5 Nasons Court. The highest-rated of the lot. Morning pastry before the permit hunt.

If the beach is fogged in

Sea fog rolls in here without warning and can sit all day. The best fallback is the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge (4.7 from 2,011 reviews, 188 Brown Street), whose boardwalk loop through salt marsh is arguably better in fog than in sunshine. The Brick Store Museum (4.5 from 117 reviews) on Main Street handles a wet hour, and the Seashore Trolley Museum (4.7 from 1,032 reviews) is fifteen minutes away and better than it sounds. Failing all that, Wells and Ogunquit are twenty minutes south and often sit outside the fog bank entirely.
