Ohana Poke in Brunswick, Maine

Ohana Poke is a takeout-only Hawaiian spot in Brunswick run by owner Yang, who's hands-on about sourcing fresh fish and explaining his ingredient choices. You build your own bowl from a solid selection of proteins, toppings, and sauces, or go for a signature like the Big Kahuna. It's quick, healthy, and a step up from the usual Maine fare.

• Fresh fish that actually tastes like it was caught recently.
• You pick your own proteins, rice, veggies, and sauce.
• Owner Yang is chatty and knows his ingredients.
• Quick, healthy meal that doesn't break the bank.

The Big Kahuna is the signature move and worth trying at least once. If you want to build, the beef option is solid, and there are plenty of other proteins to choose from. The rice is a standout, so don't skip it. One recent visitor mentioned wishing for more sauce, so ask for an extra drizzle if that's your style.

Compact and clean, with an open counter setup so you can watch your bowl come together. No tables, just a quick transaction before you head out.

Regulars praise the freshness of the fish and the generosity of portions. One visitor moving from Chicago was impressed the quality held up. Guests also note the owner's willingness to explain what's in each bowl and let you taste before committing. The main drawback: it's takeout only, which surprises people expecting to dine in.
