Chebeague Island, Maine: Ferry and Day-Trip Planner
Choose the Chebeague ferry around your mainland starting point and island plan. Chebeague Transportation Company uses Cousins Island and Stone Wharf; Casco Bay Lines serves the island from Portland. Choose a walk that fits between your arrival and return sailings at the landing your service uses. Public shore access follows particular paths and easements, not the entire shoreline.
Which ferry should you take to Chebeague?
Compare the whole journey, including the drive, parking and mainland transfer. For a visitor driving to the Chebeague Transportation Company service, the trip includes parking in Cumberland and a shuttle to Cousins Island. For someone already staying in Portland, Casco Bay Lines may fit more naturally into the day. Start with where you will be that morning and where you need to return.
| Service | Mainland approach | What to plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Chebeague Transportation Company | Visitor satellite parking in Cumberland, then the shuttle to Cousins Island. | Parking and bus timing, advance ticket purchase and arrival at Stone Wharf. |
| Casco Bay Lines | Portland waterfront departure. | The Chebeague sailing on your travel date, its island landing and the return to Portland. |
Use the ticket, return time and mainland parking arrangements for your chosen operator. Mark the landing for your service on the island map before choosing a destination. A walk that works from one arrival point can consume a different share of the day from another.
Our Casco Bay islands guide is useful if you are still comparing islands. Chebeague suits a day built around a particular walk or shore access point, with the ferry approach chosen to match it.
How does CTC parking and the shuttle work?
CTC directs guests and visitors to its satellite lot off Route 1 in Cumberland. Its navigation instructions use 1 Thomas Drive, Cumberland Foreside, with the lot across Route 1 from that address. The shuttle connects the lot with the Cousins Island wharf. Use the bus departure shown for your sailing; arriving at the lot at the boat's departure time misses an entire step.
The parking page describes a roughly fifteen-minute shuttle ride and a bus departure thirty minutes before the ferry arrives at Cousins Island. The bus departure printed for your sailing is the time to use at the lot. Keep parking payment and your ferry ticket easy to find before boarding the bus.
The wharf-area parking on Cousins Island is primarily for residents with permits, with extremely limited visitor space. The satellite lot is the practical choice for visitors catching a specific sailing.
CTC says parking and ferry reservations are not needed, while its ticket policy requires advance purchase. Buy the ticket before travel, keep it ready for collection and wait for the crew to call passengers aboard.
What should you do once you arrive?
Choose one part of the island and one main shore or walking destination. The Maine Coastal Program's public-access guide is a useful starting map because it identifies the actual rights of way and public sites. Follow the marked public paths and rights of way to the shore.
Stone Wharf is the CTC landing and an active waterfront. Give working users and arriving passengers room before stopping to orient yourself. If the visit is mainly a walk, decide how long you want to be away from the landing and reserve enough time to retrace or complete the chosen route.
The state's guide describes the Curit Property as town-owned woodland with a short, approximately 0.4-mile trail reached by a right of way from North Road. For a shoreline visit, look at the access points below and choose one that fits your arrival point.
Which shore access suits your day?
Chandler Cove Beach offers town-owned shore reached by footpaths, with views over the moorings. It suits a visit centered on a beach and picnic rather than a long trail itinerary. Keep to the public beach and footpaths, protect the dune vegetation and leave the residential headlands to their residents.
The Gray Path is the public route to the Back Shore, also called Fishermen's Beach. The state identifies it as an easement through a mixture of woodland, meadow and shore. Remain on the path and respect the neighboring homes. The mapped easement is the route to use between the road and the shore.
Indian Point includes protected shorebird habitat and public access within specified limits. It is also associated with a tidal bar toward Little Chebeague. The state's guide warns that currents and the tide can strand visitors on that crossing. For a straightforward day trip, stay on the Chebeague side. Enjoy the allowed shore areas while following posted nesting and access restrictions.
One shore stop with time to linger is a better fit for a day trip than a circuit of every beach. Match the walk and the setting to the return journey. Our broader Maine islands guide explains why access details often determine the experience more than an island's size or reputation.
What changes if you bring a bicycle, dog or mobility aid?
A bicycle can change the possible outing, but it adds a transport task. CTC says its shuttle can carry only a limited number of bicycles. For bulky gear, the operator describes dropping items at the wharf before returning to the satellite lot and taking the bus. Allow time for the wharf drop, the drive back to the satellite lot and the scheduled bus.
CTC asks passengers needing disability accommodations to call at least twenty-four hours in advance. The ramp can be steep at low tide. Arrange the boarding assistance with CTC in that advance call, including the ramp conditions for the sailing you want.
Pets must be controlled under the ferry's rules, and island sites can have separate restrictions. Indian Point's nesting-season restrictions are one example. If your day also includes a meal on the mainland, the Portland dog-friendly restaurant guide can help you choose a mainland stop after the ferry.
How does Chebeague fit into a Portland stay?
A day based in Portland works best with a simple return plan. Compare Portland lodging around the rest of your stay, then choose the ferry and mainland transfer. Leave a comfortable interval between the return boat and a mainland dinner reservation.
The Portland day-trip guide offers alternatives when the day's weather or transport does not suit an island outing. Portland's parks can also provide a shore-and-walking day with fewer moving parts. Give Chebeague a day when the walking and the ferry journey are both part of the pleasure.
For a longer trip, place the island alongside the coast guide, summer activities and road-trip itinerary. Keep the ferry day light enough that a slower walk or delayed sailing does not unravel the following night.
Chebeague day-trip questions
Do both ferries leave from Portland?
No. Casco Bay Lines departs Portland; CTC's crossing uses Cousins Island, with a visitor parking and shuttle arrangement in Cumberland. Choose the operator before arranging mainland parking or deciding where the rest of your day begins.
Can visitors park beside the CTC wharf?
Visitor spaces at the Cousins Island lot are extremely limited. CTC directs visitors toward its Route 1 satellite lot. Use the Route 1 satellite lot for the sailing you want.
Does CTC require a reservation?
Its parking page says reservations are not needed, while ferry tickets must be bought in advance. Follow both instructions: have your ticket ready and arrive for the appropriate shuttle and boarding sequence.
Can you walk anywhere along the shore?
No. Public access is tied to particular town properties, paths and easements. Use the state's access guide and current signs. Respect private yards and shorebird restrictions even when an informal-looking route seems to lead to the same beach.
Can you bring a bicycle?
CTC carries only a limited number of bicycles on its shuttle. For bulky gear, CTC describes a separate wharf drop before parking. Leave time for the transport arrangements as well as the ride itself.
Are the summer sailing times valid in October?
Use the schedule effective on your travel date. Both operators publish seasonal timetables; CTC's listed 2026 off-season change is October 13. For a trip before October 13, 2026, use the preceding timetable; from that date, use the off-season schedule.
