Get on the water. Rangeley Lake State Park has the main public access for swimming and launching. Hike the Appalachian Trail sections over Saddleback and the Bigelows, or take the shorter climb up Bald Mountain for a view over the whole lake chain. The Height of Land overlook on Route 17 is one of the genuinely great roadside views in Maine and worth timing for late afternoon.

Getting here and when to go
Rangeley is roughly three hours from Portland and a similar distance from Bethel by mountain roads. Fuel and groceries thin out well before you arrive; stock up in Farmington.
