Maine to Campobello: Plan a Day Trip From Lubec

6 minute read•updated

Plan Campobello as a Canadian day trip from Lubec, with the required border documents for both directions and Atlantic Time on the day's schedule. Choose the Roosevelt cottage and a program during the operating season, or a separate grounds-and-trails visit. The bridge crosses an international border, and the cottage and programs operate seasonally.

Is Campobello a sensible day trip from Lubec?

Campobello is a different kind of excursion from adding another Maine town to the itinerary. Roosevelt Campobello International Park is on an island in New Brunswick, reached from Lubec by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge. The destination is close across the channel, but the trip crosses an international border. Carry the travel documents required for entry and return.

The park combines a historic Roosevelt summer home with an outdoor landscape of trails, shore views and carriage drives. Choose which part brings you there. A visit centered on the cottage needs its operating season; a walk outside asks a different set of questions about conditions and facilities.

Use the Downeast Maine guide to shape the larger stay. Campobello deserves a deliberate place in it, with time on the island and room for the return. Treating it as an improvised detour after several other stops makes the practical differences harder to manage.

Which border requirements apply?

Each traveler needs the documents required for entry to Canada and return to the United States. The Canada Border Services Agency's travel-document guidance addresses entry to Canada. U.S. Customs and Border Protection's land-border travel-document guidance addresses the return. Requirements differ with citizenship, status, age and mode of travel.

Use the CBSA and CBP requirements for each traveler’s citizenship, status, age and land-border crossing.

Keep the documents with the people who need them and include the return in the plan. The border agencies determine entry requirements; park admission is separate.

Which clock and season apply?

The park operates on Atlantic Time, one hour ahead of Maine's Eastern Time. Its published 2026 building and program hours are 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Atlantic, equivalent to 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Eastern. Write both time zones beside each reservation.

The announced 2026 closing date for buildings and programming is October 17. The park separately says its grounds and Natural Area remain open year-round. Those statements describe different visits. Winter visits focus on the grounds and Natural Area.

For a later season, use the park's published dates when they become available. Choose the accommodation and travel window around what you actually intend to see. Our Maine seasonal guide can help with the wider holiday, but Campobello's own calendar determines its indoor program.

How much should you put in one day?

The park recommends at least three to four hours for a visit, longer if you want programs or substantial walking. Use that as the operator's planning guidance, then add the border and travel portions separately.

A mixed first visitThe cottage, then one outdoor choiceA meal break and an unhurried return to Maine

For a first visit during the operating season, make the cottage the anchor and add one outdoor choice. That gives the day a clear center without insisting on every trail. If a particular program is the main reason you are traveling, secure its arrangements first and place the other stops around it.

How do the cottage tour and Eleanor's Tea work?

The park's program page says the Roosevelt Cottage interior is visited with an interpreter, with tickets obtained there on the day. The first floor has ramp access.

Eleanor's Tea is a separate interpretation program at Wells-Shober Cottage. The current page distinguishes a morning program with same-day, first-come tickets from an afternoon program that also offers online reserved seating. Obtain a same-day morning ticket or reserve an afternoon seat for the selected session.

The National Park Service confirms that the park has no admission fee. Budget separately for the selected program and food service.

For context on historic outings elsewhere in Maine, use the historic-sites guide and museum guide. Campobello combines that historical interest with a separate border and island-planning task.

Which walk should you choose?

The park's trail descriptions make it possible to choose by surface and effort rather than by a scenic name alone. Duck Island View is listed as a short, easy viewpoint walk. Fitz William Trail is described as a level dirt route suitable for walking and cycling. Eagle Hill Bog uses a wooden boardwalk with an observation deck. Choose the trail surface and distance that suit the group.

A longer coastal option asks more of the group. The park describes the Raccoon Point–Sunsweep route as having roots, wet sections and rugged ground. Pick it because you want that walk, not because it appears to connect two attractive map symbols. Choose the return at the same time as the outward section.

Our coastal-hiking guide helps compare the kind of outing with other days in the holiday. For an alternative entirely on the Maine side, read the Quoddy Head guide. These are separate park visits with separate rules, not one continuous walking route across the border.

What can you see without making a long hike?

The park identifies Mulholland Point Lighthouse, Friar's Head and Liberty Point among its scenic stops. Mulholland looks across the channel toward Lubec; Liberty Point provides views along the coast. Choose one or two from the park map according to the route and access your group wants.

The carriage roads offer another way into the Natural Area, but the park says they are unsuitable for campers, buses and recreational vehicles. Keep the vehicle choice and the walking plan together rather than discovering the mismatch at a narrow entrance.

For a day with children, prioritize a stop where the surface and boundaries are clear. The park warns of cliffs and ledges on parts of its landscape. Enjoy the view from a suitable place without making closeness to the edge the point of the outing.

What should you leave for another day?

Leave a complete circuit of Downeast Maine for another itinerary. The national-parks guide explains Campobello's place among very different protected sites, while the state-parks guide covers alternatives on the Maine side. Use those choices to build several good days instead of crowding them into this one.

For visitors whose main interest is island geography, our Maine islands guide offers a broader comparison. Campobello's bridge route and international setting make it a specific planning choice. The right day ends with time enjoyed on the island, not a long list of stops passed through quickly.
