Where should you stay for a southern-coast long weekend?

Use Ogunquit as the central base for this three-town route. The first day stays south in York, the middle day stays local, and the last goes north to Kennebunkport. That gives the itinerary a direction and avoids packing up every morning. A beach-focused party can instead stay by its preferred beach and shorten the other town visits.

Named lodging examples include Anchorage by the Sea in Ogunquit and The Boathouse hotel in Kennebunkport. Their town locations fit different versions of the weekend.

Choose Kennebunkport lodging when village dining and the river are the main reason for coming. Choose York when the beach-and-playground day matters most. The southern Maine coast region contains several different town centers; a regional lodging label alone does not tell you which one is outside the door. What should you do on the York day?

Day 1: Short Sands or Long Sands, then Nubble

Choose the beach before choosing extra stops. Short Sands suits a day where the village setting and playground are as important as the sand. York's recreation department places it in Ellis Park and lists restrooms, seasonal lifeguards, paid parking, a playground and a promenade. Long Sands is the alternative when the beach itself is the main event. ^[1]

Add Nubble Lighthouse as the coast-viewing stop, then end the day rather than repeating the same short beach visit in Ogunquit. A lighthouse view and a beach afternoon make two different parts of the day; three beach parking lots do not. The York town page supplies the wider village context for visitors staying longer.

For an arrival day shortened by travel, keep York to one beach and move the lighthouse to an optional block. A late arrival calls for a shorter first day, not a faster version of all three days.

How should you spend the Ogunquit day?

Day 2: Beach first, then Marginal Way and Perkins Cove

Use the local day for Ogunquit Beach. Main Beach, Footbridge and North Beach are access choices for the same beach system, not three separate destinations to collect. Choose Main Beach for the downtown end, Footbridge for the Ocean Street approach, or North Beach for its northern access. The parking choice should serve the place where you intend to spend the day. ^[2]

In 2026 the town lists Main Beach at $9 an hour or $50 daily, and Footbridge and North Beach at $8 an hour or $45 daily. Give Marginal Way and Perkins Cove their own walking block after the beach, or reverse the day when the walk is your priority. Do not treat the ocean-side walk as the same experience as sitting on the sand. A party that mainly wants the walk and village should shorten the beach block and retain the cove; a party with beach gear should do the opposite.

What belongs on the Kennebunkport day?

Day 3: Dock Square and one beach in the Kennebunks

Begin with the village around Dock Square, then choose the beach outing. Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are neighboring towns divided by the Kennebunk River. The distinction becomes practical at the beach: Kennebunk's beaches and Kennebunkport's beaches have different access and parking arrangements. A room advertised as being in the Kennebunks does not make those systems interchangeable. ^[4]

Gooch's, Middle and Mother's Beach are in Kennebunk. The town's 2026 rule requires beach parking permits June 15–September 15. Goose Rocks is a Kennebunkport beach, not an extension of the same permit zone. Keep the permit for the beach and town named on it. ^[5]

Use the afternoon for the beach you chose, then return to the village for the end of the trip. Skip the impulse to add every coastal road and another lighthouse. The point of the Kennebunks day is combining a riverfront town with a deliberate beach choice, not discovering at each stop that the parking rule has changed.

When is this itinerary most useful?

Use the summer version when time on the sand is the central activity. In October, keep the village and coastal walks but treat the trip as an autumn coast visit rather than a swimming holiday. A wet day is best spent in the town you are already using as a base, with meals and indoor stops taking the larger blocks. Move the principal beach day to the clearer day and keep the three-town route flexible. Flexibility here means changing the order of real activities, not leaving the whole weekend without a recommendation.

What does the weekend cost beyond the room?

The most predictable extra cost in this route is parking, because separate towns run separate systems. An Ogunquit all-day beach stay has a published lot price; a Kennebunk beach visit during permit season needs its own permit. Room, meal and performance-ticket costs sit alongside those parking charges.

For a beach-heavy stay, lodging within the area you intend to walk can remove repeated public-lot purchases from the daily plan. That is a location advantage, not a claim that every hotel's parking is included. Use actual property fields in the town's lodging directory to distinguish the two.

What should you skip on this long weekend?

Skip Portland, Acadia and a daily change of hotel. Portland's three-day itinerary is its own trip, and the Maine coast road trip is the framework for combining regions. Keep this weekend on the southern shore and give one beach enough time to feel like a beach day. That is the difference between a coastal break and three days spent arriving at the next parking lot.
