How many lighthouses are there in Maine?
Around sixty-five standing light towers, depending on whether you count private and offshore ones. This ranking covers the forty that appear as visitable places in our data, which is close to the set an ordinary trip could reach.
The map is a selected inventory, not a definitive count of all Maine lighthouses. Duplicate names, viewpoints and museum records need separate identities before any total is published.
Which is the most visited lighthouse in Maine?
Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, by an enormous margin: nearly 17,000 Google reviews against about 4,600 for the next one. It is the second most reviewed place of any kind in the state.
Can you go inside Maine lighthouses?
Usually not. Most towers are closed, and what is open is the keeper's house, a museum or the grounds. A few open their towers on specific days in summer. Always check the operator's own site before traveling, because access changes season to season and this page does not track it.
At some lights, during specific visitor arrangements. Grounds, museums and tower interiors have separate access rules; a view of a tower does not imply entry.
Why do some lighthouses have so few reviews?
Because the count follows the Google place people tag, and that is often the park you stand in rather than the tower itself. Bug Light has 33 reviews on the tower and over 2,500 on the park around it. Offshore lights that can only be seen from a boat collect very few either way.
Review volume reflects an online listing and how people use it. Offshore access, duplicate records and different place labels can affect the number without establishing actual visitor totals.
Is there really a lighthouse in the middle of Maine?
Yes. Ladies Delight Light stands on a rock ledge in Cobbosseecontee Lake at Winthrop, thirty-odd miles inland, and is the only inland lighthouse in the state. It is the lone dot away from the coast on the map above, and it is not a mistake: it was built to mark a ledge that had been wrecking boats on the lake.
An inland map point needs its actual entity identified. A lighthouse museum, replica or incorrectly placed record must remain distinct from an operating coastal light station.
How should I read this ranking?
As a proxy for visitors, not a measurement. Review counts favor places that are easy to reach and have somewhere to stand, and they undercount offshore lights only visible from a boat. They also attach to whichever Google place people tag, so where we know a viewpoint is where people actually check in it is shown beside the tower rather than silently folded in or dropped. Parking lots were removed by hand: left in, the Rockland Breakwater parking lot would rank sixth in Maine, ahead of the lighthouse it serves.
As information about place records, not visitor popularity. The corrected map identifies actual lights and contextual viewpoints separately, and keeps review information outside attendance claims.
Which is the busiest lighthouse in Maine?
This review dataset does not establish visitor totals. Review counts belong to individual online place records and cannot be converted into attendance or unique visitors.
Are review counts the same as lighthouse visitor counts?
No. They count reviews attached to online place listings, with no reliable conversion to visits or unique visitors.
Are Nubble Light and Cape Neddick Light Station different lights?
No. They are names for the same lighthouse in York, viewed from Sohier Park.
