Acadia National Park in Summer, Fall, Spring and Winter

7 minute readupdated
Guides

Acadia National Park in summer is loud, gorgeous, and completely full. July and August deliver the longest days, the warmest water the coast of Maine ever manages, and a parking situation that punishes anyone who leaves the hotel after eight. Every other season trades something away for something back. Here is what each one actually costs you.

There is no single best time to visit Acadia National Park. There is a best time for foliage, a best time for swimming, a best time to have Jordan Pond to yourself, and they are four different weeks. Work backwards from what you came for.

The short answer

SeasonCrowdsWhat is openGo if
Summer, late June to AugustPeakEverythingYou want swimming, shuttles, ranger programs, long evenings
Early fall, SeptemberHigh but manageableEverythingYou want the best all-round conditions of the year
Late fall, OctoberWeekend spikesMost things, thinning outYou came for foliage and cold clear air
Winter, December to MarchNoneCarriage roads, town basicsYou ski, snowshoe, or want the place to yourself
Spring, April to mid-JuneLowRoads reopen, services lagYou want quiet and do not mind mud and bugs

Summer: everything works, nothing is empty

July and August are when the machine runs at full speed. The Island Explorer shuttle covers the trailheads, ranger programs run daily, Jordan Pond House is serving, and every restaurant in Bar Harbor is open late. If you have kids or you are visiting without a car, this is the season built for you.

The costs are real. Sand Beach (4.8 from 970 reviews) fills its lot before nine on a clear morning, and the overflow ripples down Ocean Drive. The Beehive Trail (4.9 from 583 reviews) becomes a queue on its iron rungs, which is unpleasant on a ladder route where passing is awkward. Cadillac sunrise vehicle reservations sell out. And the water at Sand Beach is fed straight off the Gulf of Maine. It rarely climbs out of the fifties, even in August. People swim. Most people swim once.

Two summer specifics worth planning around. Fog is a Down East fixture, thickest in June and early July, and it can erase a summit view for three days running. And the crowd is a morning-and-midday phenomenon: from about four in the afternoon the day-trippers and the tour buses drain off the loop road, and Sand Beach and Thunder Hole (4.6 from 3,222 reviews) become genuinely pleasant.

One more summer variable: weekends. Saturday and Sunday on Mount Desert Island draw day-trippers from Bangor and the whole midcoast on top of the people already staying here, and the loop road parking turns over about twice as fast. If your dates are flexible at all, a Tuesday in August is closer to a Sunday in September than the calendar suggests.

September: the best month, if you can only pick one

Water is at its warmest in early September, the air is dry, the bugs are gone, the trails have grip instead of grease, and the summer crowd has largely gone back to school. Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain (4.9 from 1,528 reviews) comes at a civilized hour instead of before five.

The one thing to know: Bar Harbor is a working cruise port, and fall is its heavy season. On a big ship day the town center and the Shore Path (4.8 from 474 reviews) get busy in a wave that lasts a few hours and then leaves. The park itself absorbs it better than downtown does.

October: foliage, and the scramble for sunrise

Color on Mount Desert Island typically peaks in mid-October, later than inland Maine because the ocean holds the island warm. The eastern half of the park burned in 1947 and grew back in birch, aspen and maple, so the hillsides below Cadillac turn yellow and orange in a way the dark spruce of the western side never does. Gorham Mountain (4.9 from 274 reviews) and the Jordan Pond Path (4.8 from 569 reviews) are the two easy walks that pay off most.

October is also when Cadillac becomes the first place in the country to see the sunrise, which starts around the beginning of the month and holds through winter. That fact is why sunrise reservations for October release-days disappear in seconds. Have a backup: the summit is walkable, and the ridge trails are open to anyone on foot.

By late October the park is still open but the services are not. Restaurants shorten weeks, the shuttle stops, Jordan Pond House closes. Open park, closed island. Depending on temperament that is the best fortnight of the year.

Winter: a different park entirely

From about December to mid-April most of the one-way Park Loop Road and the Cadillac Summit Road are gated and unplowed. What that leaves is 45 miles of carriage road, ungroomed but heavily used by skiers and snowshoers, plus a short drivable stretch of Ocean Drive. Bar Harbor keeps a handful of restaurants going and closes the rest.

It is quiet in a way that is hard to overstate. You can walk a mile of carriage road without meeting anyone. It is also cold, icy underfoot, and short on daylight. Acadia in winter covers what stays open and what gear the ice actually demands.

Spring: the honest season

April and May are Acadia's least flattering months. Roads reopen around mid-April, trails run with meltwater, and the higher granite stays slick. Black flies arrive in late May and stay through most of June, and they are worse in the woods than on the coast. Several cliff routes, including the Precipice, close each spring while peregrine falcons nest, and they stay closed until the chicks fledge. Check before you drive to the trailhead.

What you get in return is emptiness and cheap rooms. Late May and early June, on a dry week, are underrated: the Ship Harbor and Wonderland trails on the quiet side, Echo Lake Beach (4.7 from 193 reviews) without a soul on it, and the whole west side of the island to yourself.

Pick by what you came for

  • Swimming: late July to early September, and even then bring a wetsuit or accept a cold shock. Echo Lake is fresh water and ten degrees warmer than the ocean.
  • Foliage: the second and third weeks of October, weekdays.
  • Serious hiking: mid-September to mid-October. Dry rock, cool air, no bugs. See the best hikes in Acadia.
  • Sunrise: any clear morning, but October through February gives you the first-light-in-America version.
  • Solitude in season: the Schoodic Peninsula in any month, or the western side of Mount Desert Island on a summer weekday.
  • Families: July and August, when the shuttle removes the parking problem entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What is Acadia National Park like in summer?

Busy and fully operational. All roads, campgrounds, shuttles and ranger programs run from late June through August, the days are long, and the ocean is as warm as it gets, which on this coast means the fifties. Popular parking lots fill before nine in the morning.

What is the least crowded month to visit Acadia?

Any winter month is effectively empty, but among months with full road access, May is the quietest. Early June is close behind, with the trade-off of black flies and a chance of persistent fog.

When is peak fall foliage in Acadia?

Usually mid-October on Mount Desert Island. The coast runs later than inland Maine because ocean water keeps the island warmer, so a trip timed for northern Maine's peak will arrive here early.

Is it worth visiting Acadia in the off season?

Yes, if you adjust your expectations. Spring and late fall give you open roads and no crowds with reduced services. Winter closes the Park Loop Road and the summit road but opens 45 miles of carriage road to skis and snowshoes.
