How to Get to Acadia National Park: Every Route

8 minute readupdated
Guides

Working out how to get to Acadia National Park is mostly a question of how much driving you are willing to do at the end. There is no airport at the park gates and no train anywhere near it, so almost every trip ends with the same stretch of two-lane road across the Trenton causeway. What changes is where you start that drive from, and that decision is worth more thought than most people give it.

The short version

Acadia sits on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, on Maine's Downeast coast. One road carries traffic onto the island: Route 3, over the bridge at Trenton. Whatever your route, you end up there.

Most visitors drive the whole way. Some fly into Bangor and rent a car for the last hour. A handful fly into the small airport at Trenton, ten minutes from the island. Bus service exists but ends short of the park. There is no passenger rail. Once you are on the island, a fare-free seasonal shuttle covers most of the places you actually want to go, which means the car is optional after you park it.

Driving to Acadia

The standard route from the south

From Boston, New York or anywhere else south, the fast line is I-95 north through New Hampshire and Maine to Bangor, then I-395 east, then Route 1A southeast to Ellsworth, then Route 3 onto the island. Rough numbers: Boston is around 280 miles and four and a half to five hours of actual driving; Portland is about 175 miles and three hours; New York is a full day.

Those times assume you do not stop and it is not August. In peak season, add an hour and do not be surprised if it is more. Our guide to the Portland to Acadia drive breaks that leg down with the stops worth making.

One counterintuitive thing about this route: it goes inland. You spend most of it on interstate through pine and not much else, and you do not see the ocean until the last twenty minutes. That is a feature if you want to arrive quickly. It is a disappointment if you pictured a coastal drive.

The coastal alternative

Route 1 hugs the coast the whole way from Kittery through Camden and Belfast to Ellsworth. It is far slower — traffic lights, village speed zones, and a summer crawl through half a dozen towns — and it is the better drive if you have the day. Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory at Prospect (4.8 from 3,270 reviews) is the standout stop: a granite fort you can walk through and an observation tower on a bridge pier with a view up the river.

The sensible compromise is to run I-95 in one direction and Route 1 the other. Nobody enjoys Route 1 twice in four days.

The Trenton bottleneck

Everything funnels through Route 3 in Trenton, a strip of motels, mini-golf and lobster pounds between Ellsworth and the bridge. On a July or August afternoon it backs up, and there is no way around it because there is no other road. Cross it early in the morning or after dinner.

Since you are stuck there anyway, it is worth stopping on purpose. Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound (4.4 from 1,688 reviews) sits right by the causeway and cooks over wood fires in the open; it is the last thing before the island and the traditional first meal of the trip. The rest of that strip runs on the same logic: it exists because everyone has to pass through.

Flying to Acadia: which airport

Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport (BHB), Trenton

The closest airport to the park is not on the island but a few minutes short of it, in Trenton. Scheduled commercial service is limited and typically seasonal, usually a small regional carrier connecting to Boston, and the terminal is about the size of a large house. Rental cars are available but the fleet is tiny, so reserve well ahead. A seasonal Island Explorer route stops at the airport, which means you can land here and reach Bar Harbor without renting anything at all — the only airport in Maine where that is realistic.

Bangor International (BGR)

This is the practical answer for most fliers. Bangor is about 50 miles and an hour from Bar Harbor, has multiple mainline carriers, and has a full set of rental agencies at reasonable rates. The airport is genuinely easy — you walk from the gate to the car in a few minutes, which is not something you can say about Logan.

Bangor also gives you a plausible first or last night if your flight times are awkward. The Cole Land Transportation Museum (4.8 from 654 reviews) is a good hour if you are killing time before a departure.

Portland (PWM) and Boston (BOS)

Portland is three hours away and Boston nearly five, so you are trading a shorter flight list for a longer drive. It can still be the right call: fares into Logan are often dramatically lower, rental inventory is deep, and if you were going to spend a night in Portland anyway the detour costs you nothing. Just be honest about the arithmetic — landing at Logan at 4pm means arriving on the island in the dark.

Bus, rail and ferry

Bus: Concord Coach Lines runs scheduled service from Boston and Portland to Bangor. From Bangor, a seasonal shuttle connects onward to Bar Harbor and the Trenton airport. Operators and timetables on that last leg have changed between years, so confirm the current arrangement before you build a trip around it. Done right, this is the only fully car-free way into the park from out of state.

Rail: There is none. Amtrak's Downeaster runs from Boston as far as Brunswick, which leaves you 150 miles short with no rail connection. People do take the train to Brunswick and rent a car there, but you have not saved much.

Ferry: A seasonal international ferry has operated between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Service has started, stopped and changed terminals over the years, so treat it as something to check rather than assume. Bar Harbor is also a cruise port; ships anchor in Frenchman Bay and tender passengers ashore at the town pier, a short walk from the Village Green (4.6 from 1,177 reviews).

Local boats are a different matter and they run reliably: mailboats and ferries serve the Cranberry Isles and Swans Island from Northeast Harbor and Bass Harbor, and the Isle au Haut mailboat leaves from Stonington, about two hours' drive away.

What you need before the entrance station

Acadia requires an entrance pass, sold online and at the park. Buy it in advance and you skip a line. Separately, driving the Cadillac Summit Road requires a timed vehicle reservation in season, booked through recreation.gov on a rolling window with a small block released the day before — that one catches people out, because it is not included with the entrance pass and sunrise slots go fast.

The park is unusual in having no single main gate. Roads cross in and out of the boundary constantly, so plan your first stop rather than waiting to be stopped. The Hulls Cove Visitor Center (4.5 from 2,546 reviews) just north of Bar Harbor is the logical one: park map, current road and trail closures, and the top of the Park Loop Road. Our guide to Acadia's visitor centers covers the alternatives when Hulls Cove is closed for the season.

Getting around after you arrive

The Island Explorer shuttle is the piece most first-timers underuse. It is fare-free, runs a summer-into-autumn season, and hubs at the Village Green in Bar Harbor with routes to the Park Loop Road, the campgrounds, Jordan Pond, Southwest Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. Trailhead lots fill by mid-morning in August; the bus does not care. It also makes one-way hikes possible, which is the real advantage.

If you are camping, the shuttle is close to essential — the Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods campgrounds all sit on shuttle routes. And if you would rather stay off the island entirely, the towns near Acadia lays out what you gain and lose by basing in Ellsworth, Southwest Harbor or Winter Harbor instead.

The park itself carries a 4.9 rating from over 24,000 Google reviews, which tells you two things: it is very good, and you will not have it to yourself. Arrive early, and the getting-there problem mostly solves itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest airport to Acadia National Park?

Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton is closest, about ten miles and fifteen minutes from Bar Harbor, but it has limited, largely seasonal scheduled service. Bangor International is the practical choice for most travelers: an hour's drive, several mainline carriers and a full range of rental cars. Portland is three hours away and Boston Logan is closer to five.

How long is the drive from Boston to Acadia National Park?

Roughly 280 miles and four and a half to five hours of driving via I-95, I-395, Route 1A and Route 3. That is a clean-run estimate. In July and August, allow an extra hour for congestion on Route 3 through Trenton, and more if you are arriving on a Friday afternoon. Taking coastal Route 1 instead adds two to three hours but gives you a far better drive.

Can you visit Acadia National Park without a car?

Yes, with planning. Take a bus to Bangor and a seasonal shuttle to Bar Harbor, or fly into the Trenton airport and pick up the Island Explorer there. Once on Mount Desert Island the fare-free Island Explorer reaches most trailheads, beaches and villages during its summer-into-autumn season. Outside that season you will need a car, since the shuttle does not run.

Do you need a reservation to enter Acadia National Park?

Not for the park itself — you need an entrance pass, which you can buy online in advance or on arrival. A separate timed vehicle reservation is required to drive the Cadillac Summit Road during the busy season, booked through recreation.gov, and it is not covered by the entrance pass. Current requirements and dates are posted on nps.gov.
