Glamping Near Acadia: Under Canvas & Beyond

7 minute readupdated
Where to Stay

Under Canvas Acadia is the name most people arrive with when they start looking at glamping near Acadia National Park, and it is a genuinely good property — but it is not on Mount Desert Island, which changes your trip more than the brochures let on. There are three serious options in this area, they sit in three different places, and the right one depends almost entirely on how much driving you are willing to do.

The one thing that decides this

Glamping near Acadia National Park comes down to geography. Mount Desert Island is connected to the mainland by a single causeway at Trenton, and everything funnels through it. A property on the island puts you fifteen minutes from a trailhead. A property on the mainland puts you forty-five minutes away, twice a day, through the summer bottleneck at Ellsworth.

Neither is wrong. But if you are the kind of traveler who wants to be at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center (4.5 from 2,546 reviews) when it opens, or holding a sunrise reservation for Cadillac Mountain (4.9 from 1,528 reviews), an hour of round-trip driving before breakfast is a real cost. Decide that first, then pick the tent.

Under Canvas Acadia

Under Canvas Acadia sits on Surry Road in Surry, on the mainland southwest of Ellsworth. The camp occupies around 100 acres with more than a thousand feet of shoreline on the bay, and that waterfront is the reason to book it — you are not looking at a wooded loop road, you are looking at tidal water.

The tents are the standard Under Canvas format: safari-style canvas on a raised platform, king bed, private deck, a wood-burning stove, and an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower. Nightly rates bundle in the camp programming — morning yoga, acoustic music, lawn games, s'mores at the fire. The season runs roughly from late spring into mid-autumn; specific dates and rates are on undercanvas.com and shift year to year.

The honest drawback: the drive. Reckon on about thirty-five minutes to the park entrance and closer to fifty to the far side of the Park Loop Road, each way, on roads that clog in July and August. You will also want to know what canvas means before you commit — sound travels between tents, the stove needs feeding if you want warmth at 3 a.m., and a cold, wet stretch of Maine weather is felt more here than in a room. Most guests find that a feature. Some do not.

Terramor Outdoor Resort

Terramor is the on-island answer. It sits on Route 102 in Bar Harbor, roughly fifteen minutes from downtown and from the park entrance, with 64 tents spread through the woods. There is a lodge with a small restaurant and bar, a pavilion, and a heated outdoor pool and hot tub — meaningfully more resort than Under Canvas, and a better fit if you want somewhere to be on a rainy afternoon that is not a tent.

Tents are graded from simple to large, and the higher grades include their own bathrooms and outdoor tubs. The season runs mid-May into mid-October.

The honest drawback: it is a wooded site, not a waterfront one. If your mental image of Maine glamping is canvas facing the ocean, Terramor will not deliver that — you are trading the view for the location. It also runs at genuine resort pricing in peak weeks.

Acadia Yurts, Southwest Harbor

The third option is a different animal. Acadia Yurts sits on Seal Cove Road in Southwest Harbor, on the quiet western half of the island, and rents insulated yurts rather than canvas tents — wood lattice frames, heat pumps for warmth and cooling, full bathrooms, kitchens, Wi-Fi. There are tiny houses on the property too, and a wellness building with a sauna, float tank and yoga studio.

Functionally this is closer to a small cabin than to camping, which makes it the pick for anyone traveling with people who will not tolerate a shared bathhouse or a cold morning. It also puts you on the side of the island that stays sane in August, within reach of Bass Harbor, Ship Harbor and the Seawall shore.

The honest drawback: it is small, it books out early, and you are twenty-five minutes from the Park Loop Road stops that most first-time visitors want.

One more thing worth understanding before you book any canvas tent: what "en-suite" means in this context. You get a real toilet and a hot shower behind a door, plumbed and private, but the walls between you and the weather are fabric. Wind is audible. Rain on canvas is loud, which most people love and light sleepers do not. There is no television, cell coverage is patchy across all three sites, and at Under Canvas the power situation is deliberately minimal. Pack a headlamp, bring a book, and treat the disconnection as the point rather than a defect.

Glamping versus actually camping

Worth saying plainly: none of these is inside the park. Acadia runs its own campgrounds at Blackwoods, Seawall, Schoodic Woods and Duck Harbor, and staying in one of them buys you something no glamping site can — you wake up already inside the boundary, on the fare-free Island Explorer shuttle network, with no causeway to cross. The trade is a tent you pitch yourself and a shared bathhouse. Our Acadia camping guide covers how those reservations open and which campground suits which visitor.

Between the two extremes sit the commercial campgrounds around Bar Harbor and Trenton, many of which rent cabins, yurts and pre-set tents at a fraction of glamping rates. If the appeal of glamping is mostly "I do not want to own gear," that middle tier is worth a look first — see our rundown of Bar Harbor campgrounds.

Booking, and when to go

All three properties are small by hotel standards and all three run a compressed season. July and August weekends go first, and foliage weeks in early October are close behind. Book as far ahead as you can stand; if you are flexible, the second half of September is the best value in the calendar — warm days, cold nights that justify the wood stove, thin crowds on the trails, and the water still holding summer temperature.

Two practical notes. First, none of these sites is walkable to a restaurant, so plan on driving to dinner or eating on property. Second, glamping rates near Acadia in peak season are frequently higher than a room at a good inn in Bar Harbor — you are paying for the setting, not for savings. Compare honestly against the alternatives in our guide to where to stay near Acadia before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Under Canvas Acadia from the park?

The camp is in Surry, on the mainland, and the drive to the Acadia National Park entrance on Mount Desert Island runs about thirty-five minutes in normal conditions. Getting to the far end of the Park Loop Road, or to a Cadillac Mountain reservation, takes longer — budget close to an hour each way in peak summer traffic through Ellsworth and Trenton.

Is there glamping inside Acadia National Park?

No. The National Park Service runs four campgrounds inside the park — Blackwoods, Seawall, Schoodic Woods and Duck Harbor — and they are conventional tent and RV sites with shared bathhouses, not glamping. Every glamping property near Acadia is on private land outside the boundary, either elsewhere on Mount Desert Island or on the mainland.

What is the difference between Under Canvas and Terramor?

Location and format. Under Canvas Acadia is on the mainland in Surry with waterfront and a purer canvas-tent experience built around wood stoves and camp programming. Terramor is on Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, in the woods rather than on the water, with a lodge, restaurant and heated pool. Terramor saves you driving; Under Canvas gives you the view.

When does glamping season start near Acadia?

The canvas properties open in the second half of May and close in October, which tracks the park's own busy season. Acadia Yurts, being insulated and heated, runs a longer calendar. Exact opening and closing dates move each year, so check the property's own site rather than relying on last season's dates.
