Acadia National Park Trip: 1, 2 & 3-Day Itineraries

7 minute readupdated
Guides

Most people plan an Acadia National Park trip around a list of sights and then spend it sitting in traffic on the Park Loop Road looking for a parking space. The park is small enough to see properly in three days and dense enough to waste a week in. What follows is one, two and three-day itineraries built around when each place is actually pleasant rather than the order they appear on the map.

The two rules that shape every Acadia itinerary

Rule one: the park has a rush hour. Roughly ten in the morning to four in the afternoon, the main lots — Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond — are full and the Park Loop Road crawls. Before nine and after five, the same road is close to empty. Every itinerary below front-loads the crowded places and saves the flexible ones for midday.

Rule two: the summit road needs a reservation. Driving to the top of Cadillac Mountain requires a vehicle reservation booked in advance during the season, released on a rolling window with a small block held back a couple of days ahead. It is the one piece of an Acadia trip you cannot improvise. Check current windows and rules on nps.gov, and read our Cadillac Mountain guide before you book.

Acadia National Park holds 4.9 from 24,003 reviews and sees millions of visits into a park you can drive across in 45 minutes. Plan around that compression and it is a superb trip; ignore it and you will remember the queueing.

One day in Acadia

One day means the eastern side of Mount Desert Island and nothing else. Do not try to add the quiet side.

  • Before 8am: Enter at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center (4.5 from 2,546 reviews), pick up the park map, and start the Park Loop Road.
  • 8-10am: Sand Beach (4.8 from 970 reviews) while there is still parking, then walk the Ocean Path south to Thunder Hole — the Ocean Path Trailhead rates 4.8 from 484 reviews — and on toward Otter Cliff if the group is willing. This stretch is the best 90 minutes in the park.
  • 10-11am: Thunder Hole. Whether it performs depends on the tide and the swell rather than luck — the timing is explained in our Thunder Hole guide.
  • Midday: Jordan Pond. Walk the north end of the path from the Jordan Pond Path Trailhead (4.8 from 569 reviews) for the classic view of the Bubbles, or the full loop if you have the legs. The Jordan Pond House serves tea and popovers on the lawn here, and the wait at lunchtime is long enough that it is worth deciding in advance whether you care.
  • Afternoon: Drive the rest of the loop, then into Bar Harbor for a late lunch and the Bar Harbor Shore path (4.8 from 474 reviews).
  • Evening: Cadillac Mountain (4.9 from 1,528 reviews) for sunset if you have a reservation. If you do not, the Gorham Mountain Trailhead (4.9 from 274 reviews) starts a one-hour climb with a genuine ocean view and no permit required.

The honest limitation of a one-day trip: you will see the greatest hits and none of the park's quiet, and you will do it alongside everyone else on the same schedule.

Two days in Acadia

The second day is what turns a checklist into a trip. Day one runs as above, shortened — skip the full Jordan Pond loop and the Bar Harbor afternoon. Day two crosses to the western half of the island.

Day two: the quiet side

Start at Bass Harbor Head Light Station (4.4 from 4,616 reviews), the most photographed lighthouse in the park, and go early — the lot is small and it backs up badly by mid-morning. Walk the Ship Harbor Trail (4.8 from 115 reviews) at low tide for the tidepools, then Wonderland or the cobble shore at Seawall. Have lunch in Southwest Harbor. In the afternoon, choose between Echo Lake Beach (4.7 from 193 reviews) for an actual swim in fresh water or the Flying Mountain Trailhead (4.9 from 160 reviews) for a short steep climb over Somes Sound. Finish with Seal Cove Auto Museum (4.9 from 477 reviews) if the weather turns.

Two days done this way gives you both halves of the island and a swim, which is most of what Acadia has to offer at a walking pace.

Three days in Acadia

With three days, keep days one and two and use the third for whichever of these fits your group.

Option A: the carriage roads

Rent a bike in Bar Harbor and ride the car-free crushed-stone network — Witch Hole Pond for an easy morning, Eagle Lake for the classic six-mile loop, or the Around Mountain loop for a serious half-day. Duck Brook Bridge (4.8 from 127 reviews) is the finest piece of stonework on the system. Our Acadia biking guide covers routes and rentals.

Option B: a real hike

The Beehive Trail (4.9 from 583 reviews) is the iron-rung classic — exposed, thrilling and not for anyone uneasy with heights or for young children. Dorr Mountain, the Bubbles and the Cadillac South Ridge Trail are longer, calmer alternatives with better views for the effort. Trail signs at each trailhead state the grade and the hazards plainly; read them before you commit.

Option C: the water

A lobster boat trip or a sail out of Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor. Lulu Lobster Boat Ride rates 4.9 from 382 reviews and hauls traps as you watch; Sail Acadia (5 from 339 reviews) runs from the quiet side. The Bar Island Land Bridge (4.8 from 553 reviews) is a free alternative — walk to the island across the exposed ocean floor, watching the clock so the returning tide does not strand you.

Option D: Schoodic

The mainland section of the park, an hour's drive east, has a fraction of the visitors, its own loop road, purpose-built bike paths and Winter Harbor Light (4.9 from 29 reviews). Take this option if the crowds on the island have worn you down.

Where the itineraries change by season

SeasonWhat changesPlan accordingly
Late springSome roads and carriage roads still closed for mud; fewer servicesFocus on the Park Loop Road and coastal walks
SummerEverything open, everything full; shuttle runningEarly starts, use the shuttle, book the summit
Early OctoberFoliage peak, cool clear light, weekend trafficMidweek if possible; ridge hikes for the color
WinterLoop road largely closed to cars; no services in the parkPlan on foot, snowshoes or skis; nothing is groomed for you

Practical planning notes

  • Park entrance passes are required and sold online and at entrance stations; buy ahead to skip a line. Current prices are on nps.gov.
  • The seasonal Island Explorer shuttle connects Bar Harbor with most major stops on the loop, which turns the parking problem into somebody else's problem.
  • Reverse the loop when it is busy. The Park Loop Road is one-way through the ocean section, so a jam has no shortcut — start at the far end from Jordan Pond and work backwards on the two-way sections instead.
  • Book lodging before you plan days. In peak weeks, availability dictates the base and the base dictates the itinerary.
  • Leave one afternoon unplanned. Fog rolls in, a lot fills, a child melts down. The trips that work have slack in them.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Acadia National Park?

Three days is the honest answer: one for the Park Loop Road and the ocean cliffs, one for the quiet western side of the island, and one for a bike ride, a real hike or a boat trip. Two days covers the highlights, and one day covers the eastern side only.

What should you do on your first day in Acadia?

Start at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center before eight, drive the Park Loop Road, and do Sand Beach and the Ocean Path early while there is still parking. Save Jordan Pond and Bar Harbor for the middle of the day, when the ocean section is at its most crowded.

Do you need a car for an Acadia National Park trip?

Not strictly. The seasonal Island Explorer shuttle links Bar Harbor with the main park stops, and you can stay in town and walk to dinner. A car makes the quiet side, Bass Harbor and Schoodic realistic, and it is close to essential outside the shuttle season.

What is the best month for a trip to Acadia?

September. The water is at its warmest, the crowds thin after Labor Day, the bugs are gone and the weather is often clearer than in midsummer. Early October adds foliage but brings back the weekend traffic.
