Acadia Lodging: Where to Stay Near the Park

8 minute readupdated
Where to Stay

There is no lodging inside Acadia National Park except the campgrounds, so choosing Acadia lodging really means choosing which town you drive in from — and the towns are not interchangeable. Bar Harbor puts you in walking distance of dinner and ten minutes from the Park Loop Road; the quiet side of the island trades restaurants for space; the mainland trades atmosphere for room availability. Here is what each base actually gets you, and what it costs you in driving.

First, the geography that decides everything

Acadia is not one block of land. The main section covers roughly the eastern half of Mount Desert Island — Cadillac, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond, the Park Loop Road — and that is where most visitors spend most of their time. A second section covers the western, quieter side of the same island. A third sits across Frenchman Bay on the Schoodic Peninsula, an hour's drive away by road. Acadia National Park scores 4.9 from 24,003 reviews and the overwhelming majority of that traffic funnels through the eastern section, which is why where you sleep in relation to it matters so much.

The practical measure is not miles, it is how long it takes to reach a trailhead at eight in the morning and how long it takes to get back to dinner at seven in the evening. Route 3 into Bar Harbor is the single road most people use, and in July and August it moves slowly in both directions at exactly those hours.

Bar Harbor: the default, and mostly the right one

Bar Harbor holds most of the island's rooms — waterfront hotels on the Eden Street side, a dense cluster of Victorian inns and B&Bs in the residential streets behind Main Street, and motels along the approach roads. Its real advantage is that you can park the car once. You can walk to dinner, to the Village Green (4.6 from 1,177 reviews), to Agamont Park (4.7 from 1,775 reviews) at the top of the pier, and out along the Bar Harbor Shore path (4.8 from 474 reviews). The seasonal island shuttle runs from town into the park, which means a day without driving is genuinely possible.

The trade-offs are real. Peak-season rates are the highest on the island, most properties impose minimum-night stays in summer, and downtown parking is a scarce resource — if you book an in-town inn, confirm it has a space for your car rather than assuming. Rooms within a couple of blocks of Main Street also get street noise until late; the inn streets one ridge back are quieter for the same money. The Black Friar Inn & Pub, whose pub rates 4.5 from 477 reviews, is a fair example of the walkable-inn category.

Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor: the quiet side

Cross to the western lobe of the island and the character changes completely. Southwest Harbor is a working harbor town with a fraction of Bar Harbor's traffic, a handful of inns and motels, and immediate access to the park's quiet-side trails — the Ship Harbor Trail (4.8 from 115 reviews), the Flying Mountain Trailhead loop (4.9 from 160 reviews), Echo Lake Beach (4.7 from 193 reviews) and Bass Harbor Head Light Station, which pulls 4.4 from 4,616 reviews despite being a small light on a modest headland.

Stay here if you want evenings that are actually quiet, if you are traveling with a dog, or if you have been to Acadia before and know you do not need to be on the Park Loop Road at seven each morning. Peter Trout's Tavern and Inn (4.5 from 476 reviews) and the harbor restaurants give you enough dinner options for a few days, though not many more than that.

The cost is driving. Sand Beach and Thunder Hole are 30 to 40 minutes away depending on traffic, and you will make that drive more than once. There is no meaningful nightlife, some kitchens close early, and off-season a good share of the town shuts entirely.

Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor: small, formal, few rooms

The southern villages of Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor are the most refined corner of the island and by far the smallest lodging market — a few inns, a few rentals, and not much else. The upside is position: you are minutes from Jordan Pond, the carriage road gatehouses and Asticou Terraces (4.9 from 20 reviews), and you skip the Bar Harbor traffic entirely. The Asticou Hotel's restaurant rates 4.3 from 476 reviews, which is about right for the area — comfortable rather than exciting.

Book here only if you book early. The inventory is tiny and it goes months ahead for peak weeks.

Trenton and the Route 3 corridor: rooms when the island is full

The strip between Ellsworth and the bridge onto the island is where the motels, cabin courts and family attractions sit. It is the least atmospheric option and the one most likely to have a room in August at a defensible rate. You are 20 to 30 minutes from the Park Loop Road entrance and closer than that to the Oceanarium and Education Center (4.4 from 219 reviews).

Be honest about what this means: you are on a highway, you will drive for every meal, and the walk-to-dinner evening does not exist here. For families who want a pool and a parking space and do not care about a harbor view, it works.

Ellsworth: the value base

Ellsworth is a real town rather than a resort, about 20 miles from the park entrance, with chain hotels, a full-size supermarket, hardware stores and a hospital. If you are staying a week, cooking some meals, or traveling as a group that needs two rooms, the math often lands here. Acadia Provisions (4.6 from 326 reviews) is a decent stop on the way through.

The drawback is the daily commute — 30 to 40 minutes each way in season, and the same drive back after dinner. Nobody stays in Ellsworth for the location; they stay for the rate and the groceries.

Schoodic and the mainland east

The Schoodic section of the park has its own campground and a scattering of inns and rentals in Winter Harbor and the surrounding villages. It is genuinely quiet — Winter Harbor Light rates 4.9 from 29 reviews largely because so few people go — and the drive to the main island section takes about an hour. Crocker House Country Inn in Hancock (4.7 from 202 reviews) sits on this stretch. Choose Schoodic if the crowds are the thing you most want to avoid, and accept that Cadillac and Sand Beach become a day trip rather than a morning errand.

Camping, and why it is worth considering

The park's own campgrounds are the only way to sleep inside the boundary, and they are much cheaper than a room in town. They also book out early on a rolling reservation window, and each one suits a different trip — our guide to the in-park campgrounds covers Blackwoods, Seawall, Schoodic Woods and Duck Harbor in detail. Seawall Acadia National Park rates 4.8 from 86 reviews. If tents are not your thing but you like the idea, the private campgrounds and cabin operations on the Route 3 approach fill the gap.

Booking, seasons and minimum stays

  • Peak weeks go early. July, August and the foliage weeks in early October are the tight windows. Inns in the small villages are often committed months out.
  • Minimum-night stays are normal in season. Two or three nights is common at weekends; a single Saturday night can be impossible to book at any price.
  • Shoulder season is the value play. Late May, June and the second half of October bring lower rates and open rooms, with the caveat that some restaurants and shops are closed.
  • Winter is a different trip. Much of the island's lodging closes; what stays open is cheap. See Acadia in winter before committing.
  • Check what closes with the season. A quiet-side inn is less appealing when the two restaurants near it have shut for the year.

Whichever base you pick, plan the first morning around the park rather than the room. The trailhead lots at Sand Beach and Jordan Pond fill early regardless of where you slept, and a 20-minute head start is worth more than 20 minutes of driving saved. Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay when visiting Acadia National Park?

Bar Harbor for a first visit — it has the most rooms, the shortest drive to the Park Loop Road, and enough restaurants that you can leave the car parked in the evening. Southwest Harbor is the better call if you want quiet, and Ellsworth if you want value on a longer stay.

Can you stay inside Acadia National Park?

Only by camping. The park runs campgrounds at Blackwoods, Seawall, Schoodic Woods and Duck Harbor on Isle au Haut, and there are no hotels, lodges or cabins inside the park boundary.

How far in advance should you book Acadia lodging?

For July, August and the October foliage weeks, several months — and earlier still for the small inns in Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor, which have very few rooms. Shoulder-season trips can usually be booked weeks ahead rather than months.

Is it worth staying on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island?

Yes, if you have visited before or value quiet evenings over convenience. You trade roughly 20 extra minutes of driving each way to the main park attractions for a calmer town, easier parking and immediate access to the western trails and Bass Harbor Head Light.
