Portland, Maine to Acadia: Drive Times & Stops

7 minute readupdated
Guides

Portland, Maine to Acadia National Park is about 175 miles and there are two entirely different ways to do it. Inland on the interstate it is a three-hour drive and genuinely dull. Up US Route 1 along the coast it is a five-hour drive that people stretch into two days, because the road runs through most of what makes coastal Maine worth the flight. Neither is wrong. Choosing badly is.

The inland route runs I-295 out of Portland onto I-95, north past Augusta to Bangor, then I-395 and Route 1A east to Ellsworth, where Route 3 carries you the last stretch onto Mount Desert Island. It is fast, it has real rest stops, and there is essentially nothing to see. Take it if you are arriving on a late flight, if you have already driven the coast, or if you have three days total and every hour counts.

The coastal route is US Route 1 the whole way — Freeport, Brunswick, Bath, Wiscasset, Damariscotta, Rockland, Camden, Belfast, Bucksport, Ellsworth. It is a two-lane road through the middle of a dozen towns, with traffic lights, crosswalks and July congestion. Treat it as a day of travel, not a transfer.

The coastal route, stop by stop

Freeport, 25 minutes out

Freeport is the first natural stop and the easiest to skip if you are not there for the outlets. If you do stop, Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park (4.8 from 1,431 reviews) is a far better use of an hour than a shopping street — shoreline trails on Casco Bay, an osprey nesting island offshore. Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster (4.4 from 1,752 reviews) down at South Freeport is the working-wharf lobster shack option.

Wiscasset, and the one you can plan around

Route 1 narrows to a single lane each way through Wiscasset and crosses a bridge, and in summer this is the worst bottleneck on the entire coast. Half of it is the road; the other half is Red's Eats (4.3 from 3,342 reviews), the lobster roll stand with the line down the sidewalk. The roll is good. The queue can run an hour, and the 4.3 rating is a fair summary of that arithmetic. Sprague's Lobster (4.5 from 1,109 reviews) sits a few steps away, rates higher, and has a fraction of the wait.

A detour worth taking

If you have the day, turn south at Wiscasset. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay (4.8 from 7,005 reviews) is the highest-volume attraction on this whole stretch of coast and deserves it, and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (4.8 from 3,243 reviews) sits on the most dramatic slab of rock in Maine. Each adds roughly an hour and a half of driving to your day.

Rockland and Camden, the midpoint

This is the natural place to break the drive. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (4.8 from 1,318 reviews) is a mile-long granite jetty you walk out on; Owls Head Lighthouse (4.8 from 1,726 reviews) and the Owls Head Transportation Museum (4.8 from 1,000 reviews) are ten minutes south.

Eight miles on, Camden has the harbor everyone photographs and Camden Hills State Park (4.7 from 2,069 reviews) behind it. The auto road up Mount Battie to the Mt. Battie Tower (4.8 from 819 reviews) takes fifteen minutes and gives you the whole of Penobscot Bay. It is the single best value stop between Portland and Acadia.

Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows

North of Belfast, Route 1 crosses the Penobscot River at Prospect, and Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory (4.8 from 3,270 reviews) sits right at the bridge — a granite fort you can wander with a flashlight, and an elevator up the bridge tower to an observation deck. It is the last real attraction before the final run and a good place to stretch.

Ellsworth, the last supply town

Everything funnels through Ellsworth, and Route 3 from there to the causeway is the slowest twelve miles of the trip in August. Do your grocery run here — it is the last full-size supermarket. Helen's Restaurant (4.3 from 2,329 reviews) is the local institution for pie, and Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound (4.4 from 1,688 reviews) sits by the causeway, boiling over wood fires. Our Ellsworth to Acadia guide covers that final stretch in detail.

How to actually plan it

  • One day, arriving to start a trip: take the interstate. Leave Portland by nine, be at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center (4.5 from 2,546 reviews) by lunch, and get a first afternoon in the park.
  • One long day, scenic: Route 1, leave at seven, allow eight hours with two stops. Do not plan anything for that evening.
  • Two days, the right way: Route 1 to Rockland or Camden, sleep there, drive the shorter northern half the next morning and still arrive with an afternoon in hand.
  • Split the difference: Route 1 north as far as Belfast, then cut inland on Route 3 to the interstate at Augusta. Gets you the best half of the coast without the slowest part.

The return trip

Worth thinking about before you leave, because the drive home is where people misjudge things. Leaving Mount Desert Island on a Sunday morning in summer puts you in the same queue as everyone else checking out, and the causeway plus Route 3 into Ellsworth can cost forty-five minutes before you have really started. Either leave early, or leave after lunch and let it clear.

If you came up the coast, take the interstate back. The scenery you already saw is the same scenery, and the three hours you save are worth more at the end of a trip than at the start. If you are flying out of Portland, add a full hour of buffer beyond whatever the map says — summer Route 1 and the Wiscasset bridge do not respect schedules.

Practicalities

There is no train or scheduled bus that lands you inside the park, and once you are on Mount Desert Island the fare-free Island Explorer shuttle only runs a summer-into-autumn season — so a car is effectively required for this trip. More on the alternatives, including the small airport at Trenton and flights into Bangor, in our guide to getting to Acadia.

Fill the tank before Ellsworth, where prices climb and the queues lengthen. Cell coverage is patchy along parts of Route 1 and inside the park, so download your directions. And if you are driving the coastal route in October, expect foliage traffic on top of everything else — the road through Camden and Belfast can crawl. Once you arrive, our roundup of things to do in Bar Harbor sorts out the first afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Portland, Maine to Acadia National Park?

About three hours and 175 miles if you take I-295 and I-95 inland through Bangor, then Route 1A and Route 3. The coastal route on US Route 1 covers roughly 200 miles and takes four and a half to five and a half hours without stopping — realistically a full day once you factor in summer traffic and anywhere you actually want to see.

Is the coastal route from Portland to Acadia worth it?

Once, yes — it is genuinely one of the best drives in the northeast, and Camden Hills, Rockland's lighthouses and Fort Knox are all worth the time. But it is a slow two-lane road through town centers, and doing it in both directions on a short trip is a waste of daylight. Most people drive up the coast and back on the interstate.

Where should you stop between Portland and Bar Harbor?

If you only stop once, make it Camden — the harbor, and the fifteen-minute auto road up Mount Battie for the view over Penobscot Bay. If you have time for two, add Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory at Prospect. Rockland is the natural overnight if you are splitting the drive across two days.

Do you need a car to get from Portland to Acadia?

Effectively yes. There is no rail service to Mount Desert Island and no bus that drops you at a trailhead. Flying into Bangor and renting a car shortens the drive to about an hour, and the seasonal Island Explorer shuttle can cover you once you are on the island, but getting from Portland to the park without your own vehicle is difficult.
