Towns Near Acadia National Park: Where to Base

7 minute readupdated
Where to Stay

Choosing between the towns near Acadia National Park is really a choice about how much you mind driving and how much you mind crowds — the two go in opposite directions. Bar Harbor puts you five minutes from the Park Loop Road and in the middle of the busiest street in Hancock County. Forty minutes away there are villages where you can park outside the restaurant. Here is what each base actually costs you in time, and what it buys.

The geography in one paragraph

Everything funnels through Ellsworth, then down Route 3 through Trenton, over one bridge onto Mount Desert Island. The island splits at Somes Sound into the busy east lobe (Bar Harbor, the Park Loop Road, Cadillac) and the quiet west lobe (Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor). Separately, the mainland Schoodic Peninsula holds a third piece of the park about an hour around Frenchman Bay. Where you sleep determines which of those three you can reach easily.

On the island

Bar Harbor

The default, and for a first visit the right answer. Bar Harbor has the density of everything: restaurants, outfitters, boat tours, groceries, and the Island Explorer shuttle hub at the Village Green (4.6 from 1,177 reviews). The Hulls Cove Visitor Center (4.5 from 2,546 reviews) is five minutes north and the Park Loop Road starts there.

It is also the only base where a car is genuinely optional in season. Agamont Park (4.7 from 1,775 reviews), the Bar Harbor Shore Path (4.8 from 474 reviews) and the Bar Island Land Bridge (4.8 from 553 reviews) are all on foot from the middle of town.

The trade-off: August rates, congested sidewalks, and cruise ship days when several thousand extra people arrive at once. Side Street Cafe (4.4 from 4,678 reviews) and Geddy's (4.4 from 4,455 reviews) carry review counts that tell you exactly how many people pass through.

Southwest Harbor

Southwest Harbor is the best compromise on the island: a working boatbuilding village with real restaurants and about a third of Bar Harbor's traffic. Beal's Lobster Pier (4.5 from 1,142 reviews) is a wharf with picnic tables, Clark Point Cafe rates 4.9 from 299 reviews, and the Wendell Gilley Museum (4.8 from 100 reviews) fills a rainy hour. Echo Lake Beach (4.7 from 193 reviews), Ship Harbor Trail (4.8 from 115 reviews) and Bass Harbor Head Light Station (4.4 from 4,616 reviews) are all within fifteen minutes.

The trade-off: 30 to 40 minutes to the Park Loop Road, around the head of Somes Sound. That is a real cost if you plan to be at Sand Beach at sunrise every day.

Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor

Northeast Harbor is the quietest and most manicured option, with the Asticou Terraces (4.9 from 20 reviews) climbing above the harbor and Abel's Lobster (4.6 from 1,096 reviews) nearby. It is close to Jordan Pond and the carriage roads — the Jordan Pond Path Trailhead (4.8 from 569 reviews) is a short drive — and it is the best base for the carriage road network.

The trade-off: very little happens after dinner, and the choice of places to eat is short.

Bass Harbor and Tremont

The furthest corner and the least touristed. Working harbor, state ferry to Swans Island and Frenchboro, and the Seal Cove Auto Museum (4.9 from 477 reviews) up the road. Good for a second visit or a long stay; too far out for a three-day highlights trip. Our guide to Bass Harbor covers this corner in detail.

Off the island

Ellsworth

Ellsworth is 30 to 40 minutes from Bar Harbor and it is the practical choice — the last real town, with supermarkets, hardware, pharmacies and a year-round restaurant scene that does not shut in October. Provender Kitchen and Bar rates 4.7 from 716 reviews, Zeppa's Pizza 4.9 from 524, Brick House Soups 5.0 from 339, and Helen's Restaurant of Ellsworth 4.3 from 2,329. The Grand (4.7 from 133 reviews) is a restored downtown theater.

The trade-off: you drive the Route 3 corridor twice a day, and in July and August that corridor backs up badly. Budget an extra half hour each way in peak season.

Trenton

The strip between Ellsworth and the bridge: motels, campgrounds, mini-golf and lobster pounds, none of it scenic. What it has is proximity — you are twenty minutes from the visitor center — and the fact that everyone drives past it means the eating is better than it looks. Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound (4.4 from 1,688 reviews) cooks over wood fires right by the causeway.

Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula

An hour from Bar Harbor by road around Frenchman Bay, and a different pace entirely. This is where you go if the island feels like too much: the Schoodic Loop Road, the Schoodic Institute (4.7 from 41 reviews), Winter Harbor Light (4.9 from 29 reviews), and The Gallery (4.9 from 84 reviews) for dinner. A seasonal passenger ferry crosses from Bar Harbor, which makes a day trip possible without the drive — our guide to the Schoodic Peninsula covers what is over there.

The trade-off: you are committing to Schoodic rather than the island. Doing both from here means two hours of driving on any day you cross over.

The Blue Hill peninsula, Deer Isle and Stonington

South and west of Ellsworth, an hour to ninety minutes from the park, and beautiful in a way that has nothing to do with Acadia. Blue Hill has Arborvine (4.8 from 161 reviews) and a strong crafts tradition; Deer Isle has Aragosta at Goose Cove (4.7 from 242 reviews); Stonington is the working granite-and-lobster town at the end of the road and the departure point for the Isle au Haut mailboat. Treat these as a destination in their own right rather than a base for the park.

Drive times to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center

BaseDrive timeBest for
Bar Harbor5 to 10 minutesFirst visit, no car, dining
Northeast Harbor20 minutesCarriage roads, quiet
Southwest Harbor30 to 40 minutesBest all-round balance
Bass Harbor40 minutesLonger stays, real quiet
Trenton20 minutesValue, campgrounds
Ellsworth30 to 40 minutesYear-round services, off-season
Winter Harbor60 minutesSchoodic side, solitude
Bangor75 minutesAirport nights only

Add 30 to 60 minutes to anything crossing the Trenton bridge on a July or August afternoon. That single stretch of Route 3 is the reason off-island bases cost more time than the map suggests — our guide to getting to Acadia covers the approach in full.

A short decision rule

  • Three days, first visit: Bar Harbor. Do not overthink it.
  • Five days or more: Southwest Harbor. You will use the quiet side.
  • Traveling with a large RV: Trenton or the Schoodic side, where the roads and sites are built for it.
  • Off-season: Ellsworth. Most island businesses close; Ellsworth does not.
  • Returning visitor: Winter Harbor or Blue Hill. You have seen the loop road.

If you would rather stay inside the boundary altogether, Acadia runs four campgrounds of its own, all booked through recreation.gov and all filling months ahead for summer weekends.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best town to stay in near Acadia National Park?

Bar Harbor for a first visit — it is closest to the Park Loop Road, has the widest choice of restaurants, and is the only base where the fare-free Island Explorer shuttle makes a car optional. For a longer stay or a return trip, Southwest Harbor offers a better balance of quiet and services at the cost of a 30-to-40 minute drive to the eastern side of the park.

How far is Ellsworth from Acadia National Park?

About 30 to 40 minutes to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center in normal conditions, along Route 3 through Trenton and over the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. In July and August that corridor congests badly, so allow an extra half hour each way. Ellsworth is the nearest town with full year-round services, which makes it the sensible off-season base.

Can you stay near Acadia without staying in Bar Harbor?

Easily. Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Bass Harbor are all on the island with far less traffic. Off-island, Trenton and Ellsworth sit on the approach road, and Winter Harbor on the Schoodic Peninsula puts you next to the mainland section of the park. Each costs you driving time in exchange for lower rates and more space.

Is it worth staying on the Schoodic Peninsula instead of Mount Desert Island?

It is, if you are returning to Acadia or actively want solitude. Schoodic has its own loop road, campground and shoreline with a fraction of the island's visitors, and a seasonal passenger ferry from Bar Harbor. But it is roughly an hour by road from the island, so trying to do both from Schoodic means two hours of driving on every crossover day.
